ブリヤート，というのはモンゴル民族の一つである。ブリヤート人は昔，バイカル湖のほとりでアイマク，オトクといった集団ごとに狩猟，遊牧をして，どの国の支配下にもなく自由に暮らしていた。1000年くらいの間，そのような暮らしを続けてきた。エヒリト，ボルゴト，ホリトゥメトなどといったアイマクがその頃あり，それらが今のブリヤートモンゴルの祖先となっている。今はエヒリトに8氏族，ボルゴトに7氏族，ホリトゥメトに11の氏族がある。今もブリヤートの大部分はバイカル湖畔に暮らし，イルクーツク，ブリヤート共和国，チタ州などに40万人ほどのブリヤート人がいる。西側にいるブリヤートはエヒリト，ボルゴトなどで，東側，チタ州などに住むブリヤートがホリトゥメトである。そのほかにはモンゴル国に3万人から4万人いる。ほとんどは1918年の十月革命から移住した人々である。中国，このフルンボイルには6千人ほどのブリヤートがいる。1918年から20，30年代にロシアを出て中国領に入ったのだ。中国に移住したブリヤートは1921年に中国の承認を得て，シネヘン流域がブリヤート人の土地とされた。以来今まで，中国領内にブリヤートがいるのである。ロシアにいる者はロシアの支配，モンゴルにいる者はモンゴルの支配のもとに暮らしている。そのほか世界のあちこちに散らばっているのだろうが，それについては私は知らない。 13世紀，チンギス・ハーンがモンゴル統一を果たしたとき，チンギスの長男，ジュチがバイカル湖畔に攻め込み，森の民（ブリヤート）を支配下に置いた。それから後，ブリヤートと言うのはモンゴルと同じ「骨を持つ者（民族）」となった。ブリヤート人は軍に組み込まれ，あちこちに戦争に行き，散り散りになった。17世紀の終わり頃にはコサック兵がシベリアを統治し，ブリヤートの暮らす地域も帝政ロシアの領土となり，ブリヤートはロシアに隷属した。この影響で，ブリヤート人はロシアの文化を取り入れた。牧草を刈取るときには馬用の草刈り機を，縫い物をするときには手動のミシンを，搾乳して加工するときには手動のクリーム分離器を使うようになった。西側のブリヤート人は18世紀後半には農耕をするようになり，ゲルではなく木造の固定家屋に住むようになった。いまや西側のブリヤートにはモンゴルゲルは無い。こちら側のブリヤートには，まだゲルに住む者もいる。ロシアにいたことで，ほかのモンゴルに比べいくらか発展した。 我々シネヘンのブリヤートは1918，19，20年頃にもともと暮らしていたウリルンゲ，ボルジャ，オノン川流域から移住を始めた。ゲルに住む者は少なくなったが，まだゲルに暮らす者もいる。仕事や暮らしの面でも年々変化している。トラクターを持ったり，ほかの機械を使うようになったりした。もともとシネヘン川流域に一つしかなかったソム（村）は，現在では三つに分かれ，それぞれのソムには小学校が置かれ，3ソム共立の中学校もできた。最近では，さらに教養を得るために進学する者も多くなっている。 シネヘンブリヤートは仏教を信仰している。1928年に自分たちで寺院を建てたが，1966,67年に文化大革命によって破壊された。その後，1983,84年にふたたび，自分たちで費用を出して寺院を再建したのだ。
The Buryat are a Mongolian people. The Buryat people lived freely on the shores of the Lake Baikal in the past, hunting and nomadic in groups such as the Aimag and Otog, and were not under the rule of any state. There were Aimaks such as Ekhilid, Bulgad, and Khori Tumed at that time, who are the ancestors of the present-day Buryat Mongols. Today there are eight clans in Ekhilid, seven in Bulgad and 11 in Khori Tumed. The majority of Buryat still live on the shores of Lake Baikal, with some 400,000 Buryat people in Irkutsk, the Republic of Buryat and the Chita Oblast. The Buryat in the west are the Ekhilid, Bulgad and others, while the Buryat in the east, in the Chita Oblast and elsewhere, are the Khori Tumed. In addition, there are between 30,000 and 40,000 in the Mongolian state. Most of them emigrated from the October Revolution of 1918. In China, here in Hulunbuir, there are about 6,000 Buryat who left Russia and entered Chinese territory in the 1918-20/30s. The Buryat who migrated to China received Chinese recognition in 1921 and the Shinekhen River basin was declared Buryat land. Since then until now, there are Buryats on Chinese territory. Those in Russia live under Russian rule and those in Mongolia under Mongolian rule. They may be scattered in other parts of the world, of which I am ignorant. In the 13th century, when Genghis Khan united Mongolia, his eldest son, Juchi, invaded the shores of the Lake Baikal and brought the forest people (Buryat) under his rule. Later, the Buryat became a 'people with bones' like the Mongols. By the end of the 17th century, the Cossacks ruled Siberia and the area where the Buryat lived became part of the territory of Imperial Russia, and the Buryat were subjugated to Russia. Under this influence, the Buryat adopted Russian culture. They began to use horse mowers for cutting grass, manual sewing machines for sewing and manual cream separators for milking and processing. The western Buryat began to farm in the late 18th century and to live in fixed wooden houses rather than yurts. There are no Mongol gers in the western Buryat now. On this side of the Buryat, some still live in gers. Being in Russia, we have developed somewhat compared to other Mongolian peoples. We, the Buryat of Sinehen, started to migrate around 1918, 19 and 20 from Urul'ga, Borzha and the Onon River valley, where we originally lived. Fewer of us live in yurts, but some of us still live in yurts. Work and livelihoods have changed over the years. They have tractors and use other machinery. Originally there was only one somme (village) in the Shinekhen River basin, but it is now divided into three, each of which has its own primary school and a joint secondary school for the three sums. In recent years, many have gone on to higher education to further their education. The Shinekhen Buryat are Buddhist, and built their own temple in 1928, which was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution in 1966/67. They rebuilt the temple again in 1983/84 at their own expense.
