ある僧がラサへの巡礼の旅に出ていた。ある夜，草原のテントで眠っていたところ，木椀に入れていたスープが不思議にも消えていることに気がついた。不審に思った僧は，気配を感じた方向へ霊砂をまいた。すると悲鳴が聞こえ，何者かが逃げ去った。その直後，妖怪たちの長であるジョーボーデーが現れ，手下がスープを盗んだことを謝罪した。そして本来は一人旅のつもりだった僧に同行して，ラサを目指すことになった。目的地に着く前に，僧は食料をすべて食べ尽くしてしまった。そこでジョーボーデーは，道中で出会った裕福な家の娘に取り憑き，僧がそれを祓ったふりをして供物を受け取る，という計画を提案した。僧はこれに同意した。ところが，ジョーボーデーが娘の首を締め始めると，僧はとっさに霊砂をまき，ジョーボーデーは焼かれてしまった。娘はすぐに回復した。家族は僧に食料や家畜を与え，僧は旅を続けることができた。やがて二人はラサに到着した。僧はジョーボーデーと別れたいと思い，市内の高僧に密かに助けを求めた。高僧はこう助言した。「ジョーボーデーに，寺院の金の塔頂を盗むよう言いなさい。そして，私が現れたら犬の糞やがらくたを積んで火をつけるのだ」。そこでジョーボーデーは塔頂を盗んだが，煙で目がくらみ，仏に捕らえられてしまった。その後，僧は橋を渡っている時に，尻が平らな悪鬼に取り憑かれてしまった。僧は再び高僧に助けを求めた。今度は「冥界から一万斤の砖茶（レンガ茶）を取ってくるように」と命じられ，僧はこれに成功した。次に「底に穴のあいた桶で水を汲んでこい」と命じられ，これにも成功した。最後に高僧は「別の僧の木椀を盗んでこい」と助言した。悪鬼がこれを盗もうとしたところ，捕らえられ，二度と姿を見せなくなった。その後，僧は高僧として名を成し，改心した悪鬼もまた高僧となり，二人は同じ寺で長らく暮らした。
A monk was on a pilgrimage to Lhasa. One night, while sleeping in the tent on the grassland, he noticed that the soup in his wooden bowl had mysteriously disappeared. Suspecting something strange, he scattered magic sand toward the presence that he sensed. A scream was heard, and whatever it was fled. Immediately after, the leader of the monsters, Joobuudee, appeared and apologized for his underlings stealing the soup. Subsequently, he decided to accompany the monk on his journey to Lhasa, although the monk had planned to travel alone. Before reaching his destination, the monk consumed all of his food. Thus, Joobuudee suggested a plan: he would possess a girl from a rich family they encountered along the way, and the monk would pretend to exorcise her in exchange for offerings. The monk agreed to this plan. When Joobuudee began to strangle the girl, the monk quickly scattered magic sand on him; consequently, Joobuudee was burned. Then the girl recovered. The family offered the monk food and livestock, and he could continue with his journey. Eventually, they reached Lhasa. Wishing to be separated from Joobuudee, the monk secretly sought the assistance of a high priest in the city. The high priest advised: “Tell Joobuudee to steal the golden pinnacle from the temple. Then, pile up a lot of dog poop and all kinds of junk, and light a fire when I appear.” Therefore, Joobuudee stole the pinnacle; however, the smoke blinded him, and he was captured by the Buddha. Later, while crossing a bridge, the monk was possessed by a flat-bottomed devil. Once again, he sought the help of a high priest. This time, the monk was instructed to retrieve 10,000 jin of brick tea from the underworld, to which he succeeded. Subsequently, he was instructed to retrieve water using a bucket with a hole at the bottom, to which he succeeded as well. Finally, the high priest advised him to steal a wooden bowl from another monk. When the devil attempted to steal it, he was caught and never reappeared. Subsequently, the monk became a high monk. The devil, now reformed, became a high monk as well, and the two resided in the temple for many years.
